How to Care for Your Jewellery

Top tips on how to care for your silver and gold jewellery and keep them looking fresh for longer.

We pride ourselves on only using high quality materials sculpted by skilled silversmiths to ensure that, with a little bit of love, you can enjoy your jewellery for a lifetime.

To help preserve your jewellery and minimise tarnishing, simply follow our few tips.

Handle with care

The higher the quality of silver, the softer and, therefore, more malleable it is. This allows all bangles to be adaptable to fit different wrist sizes, but please take care when adjusting and handling your jewellery to avoid mis-shaping or breakage. Also avoid scratches to the surface by storing pieces individually and avoid mixing up with chains and other harder metals/ stones.

Store it well

Store your jewellery individually to avoid scratches and tarnishing from too much exposure to air, humidity and sunlight. It’s a great idea to invest in a jewellery box to keep your treasures safe, or a dedicated drawer. You can get a range of jewellery trays with different compartments which slot into a drawer, and offer a more discreet option if you have a larger jewellery collection. The ideal place for jewellery is somewhere cool and dark with consistent temperature and low humidity. So bathroom storage is a no-no if you want to keep tarnish-free for longer.

Separate by type

Make sure to keep your silver, fine and costume jewellery separate to avoid the metals tarnishing and scratching when they rub up against each other.

Keep it dry

To keep your jewellery from tarnishing and to preserve the gold plating, we advise you to keep it dry and away from lotions and potions. It’s therefore best to apply perfume and beauty products before your jewellery. Also remember to remove it before washing your hands, showering, swimming or cleaning.

Moisture is the enemy of jewellery leading to tarnishing, so make sure that each piece has been cleaned and dried before you store it.

Clean it

A gentle wipe with a soft cloth will keep your jewellery looking fresh. Never use abrasive chemicals. If you notice a bit of tarnishing on either your gold or silver pieces you can give them a little bath. Soak the pieces in warm water with a drop of dish soap and wipe it with a soft cloth. If you need a bit more power you can use a soft brush like a soft toothbrush but be gentle! Avoid using antibacterial soap as it can tarnish gold plating, so best to stick to the fairy liquid. If it needs more of a scrub then you can use specialised silver and gold products, but never use silver polish on gold jewellery as it can remove the gold-plating. You can also take it to your local jewellers for a professional clean.

Wear it!

The best way to keep sterling silver looking its best is actually to wear it often, as the natural oils on your skin actually “clean” it. As long as you keep it away from moisture and nasty chemicals.  So enjoy!
